Progressing on 5 core goals of the organization mission

3. Promoting applied biomedical research, mentoring and supporting trainees and faculty in building their programs: 

  • the multi-institutional interventional clinical trial for Biliary Atresia under an FDA IND Phase 1 was completed in April 2019 in Vietnam.  The local investigators at National Children Hospital in Hanoi, and Ho Chi Minh City, Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan will join and lead the study at their respective sites. 
  • Introduce young investigators from Vietnam University of Science at the Stem Cell Research and Application Lab to international collaborators.  A young graduate student was sponsored to attend the 2019 AASLD annual liver research meeting in Boston. 


4. Enhancing the surgical care of children in LMIC with PASS (Pediatric Acute Surgical Support) course. PASS was developed in 2015, piloted in Vietnam and implemented at several children hospitals in VN. Pakistan and Indonesia pediatric surgeons will be offered opportunities to pilot the program in their own country.

5. Invest in future leaders and collaborating with Vietnam surgeon educators and leaders at Children Hospitals and U of Medicine and Pharmacy at HCMC (HUMC) to design and develop context-appropriate curriculum for pediatric surgical training, focusing on patient-oriented care and evidence-based surgery.
